The Status Smoothie

If you’ve spent any time on TikTok in the past two years, you’ve undoubtedly come across an Erewhon smoothie…

The luxe LA grocery store has collaborated with yet another celebrity to create yet another must-have smoothie. Their latest lavish addition? The Giselderberry Boost by supermodel Gisele Bündchen, a smoothie that’ll set you back a cool $19. The originally named blend boasts 100% organic ingredients – coconut milk, coconut meat, banana, açai, dates, lucuma (no idea either!) and plant-based protein, topped with almond butter and a drizzle of elderberry syrup. The price tag might make you wince, but hey, if it’s good enough for Gisele…

Now, why are people clamouring for this obscenely expensive smoothie? Well, whilst undoubtedly good for you, it’s not entirely clear why young women seem obsessed with spending their hard-earned cash on a blend of ingredients that they can basically make at home. Most probably it’s the allure of joining the league of celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo, Bella Hadid, Kourtney Kardashian, and Hailey Bieber, who’ve all dipped into the trend of putting a hefty price tag on blended fruit (and coconut meat?). Gisele Bündchen proudly joins the club, presenting her smoothie creation to the world, possibly hoping it’ll follow in the viral footsteps of its sister, Hailey Bieber’s Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie.

But let’s hit pause on the Erewhon indulgence for a moment. While sipping on these nutritional and aesthetically pleasing smoothies may feel like a trendy ritual, the reality check is that you’re essentially buying into a pricey status symbol. When, truth be told, you can recreate these concoctions at home for a fraction of the cost. Why break the bank when you can blend your own?

Here are the recipes to prove it:

Hayley Bieber’s ‘Strawberry Glaze Skin’ smoothie:

2 frozen bananas, 3 cups frozen strawberry, 2 cups vanilla almond milk, 1/4 cup coconut water, 6 pitted dates, 1 avocado, 4 tbl collagen, 2 tbl coconut cream, 1 tsp vanilla, 2 tbl maple syrup.

Bella Hadid’s ‘The Kinsicle’ smoothie:

3/4 cup Evolution Fresh Organic Pure Orange Juice or Organic Defense Up, 1/4 cup almond milk, Half a frozen banana, 1 cup frozen mango, 1 date, 1/4 cup coconut yogurt, 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, Dash of turmeric, Coconut cream for glass. Optional: 2 tbsp aloe vera juice and 1 tsp Lion’s Mane (powder or drops) for an extra boost.

Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Good For Your Guts’ smoothie:

1/2 cup frozen strawberries, 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, 1/2 cup frozen mango, 1 pack frozen acai (2 scoops), 1/2 avocado, 1 medjool date, 2 tbsp coconut yogurt, 2 scoops chocolate protein powder gluten-free, 1 cup oat milk gluten-free, 2 tbsp coconut cream.

Gisele Bündchen’s ‘Giselderberry Boost’ smoothie:

Organic Black Elderberry Syrup + Gaia Herbs Elderberry glaze, Organic Coconut Milk + Coconut Meat, Organic Açaí + Banana + Dates, Organic Almond Butter, Erewhon Organic Plant Protein, Organic Vanilla Collagen, Organic Lucuma.

Enjoy the sip of status, or perhaps rethink your beverage budget and blend at home – because status doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag!
