Sarina Wiegman: Pioneering Triumphs in Football Management

Sarina Petronella Wiegman, born on October 26, 1969, in Den Haag, Netherlands, has etched her name into English football history as the mastermind behind the Lionesses’ victory in UEFA EURO 2022 on home soil. A trailblazer in the women’s game, she became the first coach to win consecutive major tournaments, having previously led the Netherlands to the EURO 2017 title. Widely regarded as one of the best international coaches, Sarina took on the role of England’s head coach in September 2021, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her illustrious career.

Before her tenure with the Lionesses, Wiegman achieved unparalleled success with the Netherlands. She guided her home nation to victory in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 as the host nation and earned the title of Best FIFA Women’s Coach in the same year. Under her guidance, the Dutch team also reached the final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019.

Sarina’s journey in football began on the pitch as a midfielder, earning 104 caps for her country. She captained the national side and was the first female player to reach a century of appearances. After transitioning to coaching, she continued to blaze a trail, making a name for herself in her homeland and the global women’s game.

Starting her coaching career with girls’ grassroots teams in her local Hague region, Sarina’s rise was unstoppable. She led her former club Ter Leede to a league and KNVB Cup double in 2007, before making her move into full-time coaching with ADO Den Haag in the Women’s Eredivisie. Her coaching prowess and dedication to the game caught the eye, propelling her to become the first Dutch female to earn the UEFA Pro Licence in 2016.

In January 2017, Wiegman was granted the head coach role for the Dutch national team, and her extraordinary year followed, culminating in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 victory. Her coaching journey continued to soar, and in August 2020, she was announced as the manager of the England women’s national team.

Sarina’s accolades and achievements reflect her dedication and commitment to the beautiful game. From her playing days to her trailblazing coaching career, she has left an indelible mark on women’s football worldwide. Her triumphs extend beyond the pitch, inspiring a new generation of players and leaders in the sport.
